Octave Synesthesia
2004, digital piece.

My grandmother experienced synesthesia, she would associate colour's with words and sounds. She was also trained as a painter. About 10 years ago she painted this octave to illustrate the colour's associated with sound.

I recently converted this into a digital performance piece. The period of time taken to draw is related to the pitch of the note, the lines are independent unless the keys are played in rapid succession combining their sounds which added complexity to a synesthesia colour impression. This was used as part of a talk where I compared dynamic typography to synesthesia.

Instructions: press key for sound. To clear image press the cross in corner.
